JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) - A majority of Charleston County voters said “no” to renewing a half-cent sales tax planned to fund transportation, drainage and greenbelt projects.
Charleston County general election results showed 61% of voters rejected the transportation sales tax and use referendum. Nearly 40% of voters chose ‘yes’ on their ballots.
The ballot question asked for the renewal of the half cent sales tax. The tax meant residents would fund $5.4 billion over 25 years. The plan would start in 2027 to support 22 large-scale transportation projects, drainage and greenbelt projects.
The ordinance planned for $4.9 billion toward transportation projects with $2.3 billion of that money focusing on the Mark Clark extension. The project would impact West Ashley, James Island and Johns Island areas if continued.
County councilman Larry Kobrovsky was against the referendum. Kobrovsky says the tax defeat would be “a historic vote from the grassroots level that was up against great odds.”
“This in my opinion was- and apparently in the opinion of most people in Charleston County- overwhelmingly thought it was a fiscally irresponsible plan, that didn’t address our needs countywide,” Kobrovsky says. “And we need to roll up our sleeves and you know come back in two years with something that is fiscally responsible and transparent and comprehensive.”
County council voted for the third and last time in July with a majority vote in favor of the tax. The final vote during the meeting was 6-2 with one council member absent.
Vice Chairwoman Jenny Honeycutt supported the referendum and advocated completing the I-526. She is among the 39% of voters that voted ‘yes’ on their election ballots. Honeycutt says officials will continue to look ahead to figure out solutions to issues.
“I think we all agree that we face some very challenging transportation and infrastructure issues with the amount of growth in our region and we have to address that,” Honeycutt says. “So we will look for whatever mechanism possible to continue our transportation program and meet those needs.”

Pimento cheese and palmetto trees, cobblestone streets and charming, colorful architecture are hallmarks of Charleston. Ranked by Travel + Leisure magazine 10 years running as America’s favorite city, Charleston is rich in history and contemporary attractions.
Like many of you, I have been to Charleston to partake in fresh oysters, sweat through walking tours of downtown, and eat rainbow-sprinkled soft serve ice cream at Leon’s. But, on my last trip, I added a step to my Charleston and stayed not in one of the gorgeous new hotels in downtown, but at the Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort.
Initially unconvinced that I would enjoy staying across the harbor rather than in the heart of downtown, I arrived at the resort with its spacious veranda and cozy nautical-themed lobby and felt very at home. Its location in Mt. Pleasant affords large guestrooms, each with an electric fireplace and views of the sprawling pools, marina, waterfront, and the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier permanently parked within walking distance.
The Beach Club offers free hourly shuttles to and from downtown, but the water taxi is a novel way to tour the coastline and can drop you at convenient downtown spots. My taxi dropped me at the International African American Museum, a fascinating and brilliantly developed museum that tells the story of the African American experience in thousands of creative, intentional ways.
Charleston has many layers of history and visitors would be remiss to not dive into it while you’re here. Take a guided tour of the homes and museums that deal with the American south’s heavy history. Charleston, and South Carolina in general, has done an excellent job updating the narrative surrounding the dark history of slavery. Ft. Sumter is also an informative jaunt, which also provides a nice water-front tour of the city.
Food tourists have many excellent options here. Some of my favorites are Fig, Raw 167, The Ordinary, and Wild Olive which is a short drive outside of downtown.
I find Charleston’s attractions appealing for a day-and-a-half, which is why I would recommend renting a car while you’re there. Just outside of Charleston are magnificent historical homes and gardens very much worth the drive.
Visit Middleton Place, home of America’s oldest landscaped gardens, and have an early lunch at the restaurant there that serves excellent southern cuisine. Drive another few minutes to Magnolia Gardens for a tour of the gardens and historic home. If tea is your thing, visit America’s only tea factory at the Charleston Tea Factory.
Modern Charleston offers plenty of contrast to its history. The Charleston Literature Festival runs November 1-10 and will bring almost 40 authors for engaging conversations on contemporary works. Art is abundant, and the Gibbes Museum of Art has a stunning collection of modern art and photography. Local modern art galleries showcase works from internationally known artists.
Put visiting Charleston on repeat. There are different ways to explore the city and region that are as relaxing as they are enriching.

SC Ports, the International Longshoreman’s Association, Coalition 18 and the Maritime Association of South Carolina are partnering again this year to fulfill the holiday wish lists of South Carolina foster children.
Charleston’s maritime community is encouraging its partners, businesses and area residents to donate to the Maritime Toy Drive with the goal of filling a 40-foot ONE shipping container with toys by Dec. 13. Donations will be distributed to foster children in South Carolina by the S.C. Department of Social Services.
This is the maritime community’s third annual toy drive in Charleston. These efforts have collected thousands of toys for foster children in South Carolina.
“SC Ports is dedicated year-round to connecting with local communities and giving back to our citizens,” SC Ports President and CEO Barbara Melvin said. “South Carolina’s maritime community is teaming up again to make the holidays brighter for foster children in our state. We encourage people and businesses to join us in supporting such a wonderful cause.”
“The International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1422, Local 1422-A and Local 1771 believe in service and giving back to our community,” said Yvette Flowers, Secretary Treasurer of ILA Local 1422. “We hope others in the Lowcountry will join our maritime community and support South Carolina children this holiday season.”

Stockbridge has acquired Building D at Camp Hall Commerce Center, Campus 4, a 1.2 million-square-foot industrial property in Ridgeville, S.C.
Portman Industrial and Rockpoint, a Boston-based real estate private equity firm, sold the asset with the assistance of JLL.
Completed only last year, Building D can accommodate high-volume distribution operations and features 40-foot clear height, a cross-dock loading configuration, 208 dock-high doors, four drive-in doors and 84 dock levelers. There are 847 auto parking spaces and 804 trailer storage spaces. Volvo occupies the entire warehouse supporting the car manufacturer’s nearby factory.
Located at 2274 Volvo Car Drive, Building D has access to Interstate 26 and is 36 miles northwest of Charleston, S.C. The facility is within the 6,800-acre Camp Hall, a master-planned industrial park in Berkeley County being developed by Santee Cooper, South Carolina’s state-owned electric and water utility.

Stockbridge has about $33.6 billion of assets under management across the major property types, with an emphasis on U.S. residential and industrial assets. This spring, the company purchased a two-property, 540,478-square-foot Class A industrial portfolio in Southern California’s Inland Empire from Principal Asset Management for $142.3 million.
The JLL Investment Sales and Advisory team represented Portman Industrial and Rockpoint in the sale to Stockbridge.
Big names at the master-planned industrial park
Camp Hall is home to Volvo Car USA’s first U.S. manufacturing plant, which opened in 2018. In 2022, EV battery recycler Redwood Materials announced a $3.5 billion project at Camp Hall, which broke ground in early 2024.
DC Blox, a specialist in Tier III data centers, connectivity services and dark fiber, acquired 27.5 acres at Camp Hall in July 2023. The company plans to develop a multi-tenant data center on the site.
Palmetto Railways is also building a nearly 23-mile line from the Camp Hall Commerce Park to a connection with a CSX line near a Santee Cooper power generating station in Cross, S.C. The $185 million rail project, which will improve the park’s connectivity, will be completed by 2026.
Charleston industrial still suffers hangover from boom
Charleston, a port industrial market, had a vacancy rate of 17 percent in the third quarter of 2024, according to a JLL report. This is a consequence of ballooning supply as developers in the early 2020s anticipated higher post-pandemic demand which didn’t pan out in the climate of rising interest rates and uncertain business conditions.
As recently as 2022, the market’s vacancy was around 2.0 percent, the same report shows. That year, about 6 million square feet of space came online, while there was demand for more than 7 million. In 2023 however, the situation reversed. Supply was more than 7 million square feet, but demand had shrunk to about 4 million.
On the other hand, JLL points out, the current vacancy is concentrated, with only 10 percent of buildings market-wide in greater Charleston representing 93 percent of the vacancy, driven by changes in tenant trends. Smaller buildings are attracting more users, significantly outpacing larger ones.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Lowcountry voters are urged to come to the polls prepared as Tuesday marks Election Day for the anticipated 2024 Presidential Election.
The South Carolina Election Commission saw record numbers during the early voting period. Over 1.47 million early voters turned out ahead of Election Day.
Voters who plan to cast their ballots Tuesday are urged to arrive at the polls prepared. The state Election Commission states campaign material is not allowed within 500 feet of the entrance to the polling place. That includes clothing, pamphlets, posters and small objects like pins or buttons.
The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections Executive Director Isaac Cramer says the unacceptable materials are for current candidates. Cramer says poll workers will remove any campaign material within the 500-foot zone.
“If you’re wearing a shirt, they’ll be like, ‘wear it inside out,’ you’ll probably go to the bathroom or back to your car…If you’re wearing a hat, we’ll probably ask you to go back to your vehicle or put that piece of literature away,” Cramer says, “We know people are passing out pamphlets, we know that you might bring a pamphlet with you but we just ask that, that will be put in your purse, put in your pocket or brought back to your vehicle.”
Cramer urges voters to preview their sample ballot before heading to the ballot box. He says looking at the sample ballot online helps with speeding up the voting process.
“The ballot will contain president, Congress, you got local elections as well as the constitutional amendment, local county questions and those will just be longer for voters to review,” Cramer says.
Election officials recommend voters to be voter-ready by knowing any poll location changes. Voters can find their location online on the state election commission website.
Charleston County voters will see permanent location changes starting Election Day. Officials say residents received change via notification cards. County board officials say the changes to better serve voters with fewer lines, quicker voter experience and more disability access.
The affected areas are:
Berkeley County voters will also see changes. Voters in Hanahan 3, 5 and Yeamans Club will vote at Hanahan High School auditorium. Hanahan 4 voters will vote in the high school gym.
County officials say voters affected by the change received notification ahead of this year’s voting period.
Polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters need a valid photo identification to enter the polls. Election officials say voters are eligible to vote as long as they are in line by 7 p.m.
